MDOT seeking to give drivers a break this Labor Day weekend

With Labor Day weekend almost here, the Michigan Department of Transportation is doing its part to help make travel a little easier for everyone. Spokesperson Nick Schirripa tells us they’re getting the heck out of the way.

“Aside from the ever-popular Labor Day holiday Mackinac Bridge Walk, between 3 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Tuesday, we are removing lane restrictions statewide on 96 out of 161 projects, a little more than half,” Schirripa said.

Schirripa says there are some projects that can’t be suspended for the weekend, but where possible, MDOT is removing lane restrictions. So, where will there still be closures?

“I-94 near Stevensville in Berrien County, that big I-94 project. Under the project, it’ll have two lanes open in each direction. Westbound I-94 Exit 23 — that’s at Red Arrow Highway — is closed and detoured.”

Schirripa says I-196 in Van Buren County will continue to have a lane closed between Hagar Shores Road and County Road 378. Also, some M routes, like M-139 and M-51 in Berrien County will continue to have restrictions in place.

Schirripa urges drivers to give themselves plenty of time for Labor Day travel, and he reminds them of the state’s hands-free law. That means no holding a cell phone while behind the wheel in traffic.
