MDOT Rolls Out Construction Work Monday on M-40, M-51, and Four I-94 Bridges

As weather conditions continue to grow more favorable for road construction teams across Michigan’s Great Southwest, more alerts are being posted by the team at the Michigan Department of Transportation. Starting Monday new alerts are going up on M-40 in Marcellus…M-51 in Decatur…and several I-94 bridges near Kalamazoo.

All are extended projects that will cause some potential traffic delays ranging from a couple of weeks to the rest of the summer.

Repaving starts Monday, May 13th, 2019, on M-40 in the Cass County community of Marcellus and M-51 in the Van Buren County community of Decatur.

Both projects are targeted for completion by the end of the month, Thursday, May 30th, as the Michigan Department of Transportation will be repaving 7 miles of M-40 and M-51, including M-40 from Marcellus Highway north to the Cass/Van Buren county line, and on M-51 from Swartwood Drive to the south Decatur village limit in Van Buren County.

For a map and project details, you can visit Mi Drive.  MDOT says the new pavement will extend the life of the roadway, improve safety and provide a better ride quality.

Traffic restrictions in both cases will result in single-lane closures under flag control.

Meanwhile, I-94 bridge improvements start Monday in the Kalamazoo area on that same day, next Monday, May 13th, 2019. Since there are four bridges getting the makeover, two will begin the process on Monday and two will be delayed until July 8th. All work is expected to be complete by Saturday, October 5th.

MDOT tells us they will be repairing four bridges over I-94. The $2.3 million investment includes deck patching, epoxy overlay, joint replacement and repairs, substructure repairs, concrete surface coating, and approach work. Here’s where the work will result in delays and detours:

  • Eastbound I-94 Business Loop (BL) over I-94, May 13th – July 2nd
  • Miller Road over I-94, May 13th – July 2nd
  • 35th Street over I-94, July 8th – Aug. 30th
  • 38th Street over I-94, July 8th – Aug. 30th

Epoxy overlays will be applied in September and will require short-duration closures.

MDOT says these repairs will extend the life of the bridges, improve safety and provide a better ride quality.

Traffic restrictions for the bridge projects near Kalamazoo will include nighttime single-lane closures on I-94 throughout the construction process. Additionally, the eastbound I-94 BL bridge will be detoured south on Sprinkle Road to eastbound I-94.

Miller Road will be detoured on Sprinkle Road, N Avenue, 26th Street, and ML Avenue.

One lane will be open on 35th Street via traffic regulators.

38th Street will be detoured on East Michigan Avenue, 40th Street, and MN Avenue.
