The World Class Maytag IRONMAN 70.3 Steelhead triathlon returns to Jean Klock Park and Benton Harbor on June 26. You and your family or friends can be a part of it, even if you’ve never even considered entering such a competition. Race organizers say they are still in need of some volunteers for various race day and pre-race activities.
Here is a run-down of facts and volunteer needs from Volunteer Director Corey Hansen:
Race Day is Sunday, June 26th, with many volunteer opportunities on Friday and Saturday as well.
Numerous areas of interest available – we encourage to sign up for whatever looks fun!
Race consists of 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, and 13.1 mile run. Begins and ends at Jean Klock Park with a scenic course through beautiful Southwest Michigan. We currently have a record number of athletes signed up to participate.
Athlete registration and expo will be at St. Joseph High School for Friday and Saturday volunteers, with most Race Day volunteers at Jean Klock Park.
Event has 1,100+ local volunteers throughout dozens of race functions.
Volunteers receive free t-shirt, food, and unforgettable experience helping these athletes cross the finish line.
Many job functions are organized by local sports teams or non-profit groups – the IRONMAN Foundation annually provides $15,000 in community grant funding to these organizations. Signing up for a category managed by that group is a great way to support them!

We have a particular need for local kayak owners willing to bring their own kayak and volunteer as part of the Swim Safety Team stationed around the swim course. It’s a great way to participate while having a unique perspective and front-row seat to the start of the race!
We also still have openings for jet ski and boat owners to participate by providing swim course support.
