If your commute or travel plans routinely take you down Britain Avenue in Benton Township or East Main Street (which is also Business Route 94) in Benton Harbor, be prepared to be detoured as early as tomorrow on East Main, and as soon as Monday on portions of Britain Avenue.
The Michigan Department of Transportation tells us that there will be total closures on those roads during the construction process being undertaken. Both are part of the major I-94 reconstruction project in Benton Township, which will ultimately link I-94 and US-31, a plan that has been in the works for decades.
MDOT says that Westbound I-94 BR — East Main Street — will be completely closed off from Crystal Avenue to Fair Avenue for reconstruction beginning tomorrow, Friday, October 23rd and running through Monday, November 30th. That’s a five-week shutdown. All westbound traffic will be detoured onto Crystal Avenue, Territorial Road, and Fair Avenue during that process.
Britain Avenue will also be closed between Benton Center Road and Blue Creek Road for the construction of a new bridge over US-31. That extended closure will begin next Monday, October 26th, and will run well into the year 2021, with an open-ended completion plan at this time. Traffic will be detoured onto Benton Center Road, Napier Avenue, and Hillandale Road through the full duration of that bridge replacement project.
