Mackinac Bridge Walk Monday

Set for Monday is the annual Mackinac Bridge Walk.

Mackinac Bridge Authority spokesperson James Lake tells us the walk is a tradition that goes back to the bridge’s opening.

“2024 will be the 66th Bridge Walk,” Lake said. “It’s been an annual event for that long. The only time we missed it was in 2020 when it was canceled for the COVID-19 pandemic, and in recent years, we’ve seen anywhere from 20,000 participants up to 35,000 in the 2023 walk.”

Some of those people will walk the full five-mile length of the bridge. Others will walk a portion of the bridge and then turn around. Still others will walk the whole length of the bridge, turn around, and then walk another five miles back.

Lake says the bridge walk is always a festive and rewarding day.

“It really is a wonderful event. The weather is almost always perfect and that’s what we’re expecting this Monday. It’s just a fun event, everybody’s smiling, a great chance to see the Mackinac Bridge up close and personal.”

Lake reminds everyone there will be no vehicle traffic allowed on the bridge during the bridge walk. The bridge will be closed to vehicles Monday from 6:30 a.m. to noon. Any drivers attempting to enter or leave the U.P. via the bridge that day who don’t make sure to get there before 6 a.m. will have to wait a while.
