M-63 is set to reopen on May 10 now that Whirlpool is completing its tunnel under the road as part of its Lakeview Trail system. Whirlpool told us more:
M-63 between Benson Rd. and Monte Rd. is set to reopen before the May 10th morning commute with the recent completion of tunnel work for the Lakeview Trail, the public bike trail system, on Whirlpool Corporation’s Global Headquarter Campus in Benton Charter Township. The Lakeview Trail is a multi-phased project that will create and enhance a network of biking trails in and around the Lakeview Campus—all completely open to the public.
The tunnel was constructed on April 18th and connects the currently open first phase of the Lakeview Trail with the second phase on the west side of M-63. The second phase, which includes two additional miles of trails west of M-63, is expected to be completed in early summer.
This project involves coordination between Whirlpool Corporation, Cornerstone Alliance, Abonmarche, Berrien County, Benton Charter Township, the Benton Charter Township Planning Commission and MDOT, as well as local homeowners, homeowner associations and the community at large.
In addition to the benefit of increasing health and wellness, this network of bike trails will increase traffic safety by taking bicycles off public roads.
