Local photographers capture rare Blood Moon eclipse, moonset over lighthouse

In the early morning hours of Election Day 2022, while most of southwest Michigan was still asleep, several local photographers were up capturing a rare celestial event.

Nathan Voytovick, a Lakeshore High School graduate who co-owns Midwest & Great Lakes Storm Chasers and operates Nates Dronography, posted the following images to his Facebook page:

Southwest Michigan’s Simply Laurie Photography also captured some fantastic shots:

Michigan Native Photography, meanwhile, captured a time-lapse video of the eclipse, as well as some additional photos:

According to NASA, this eclipse will be the last total lunar eclipse for three years, with the next occurring on March 14, 2025.

A lunar eclipse happens when the Sun, Earth, and Moon align in such a way that the Moon passes into Earth’s shadow. This is the first time the event has happened on a U.S. election day, according to NASA.
