More retail bad news for Berrien County.
The JoAnn Fabrics store on M-139 in Benton Township is targeted for closure under a bankruptcy recovery plan filed in Federal Court. The local store is one of 33 stores in Michigan slated for closure in court documents, first uncovered by a Traverse City television station and then confirmed by Crain’s Grand Rapids Business in stories today.
Shut down of the local JoAnn outlet is somewhat surprising, given the fact the store only recently relocated to new, larger quarters in the strip center along M-139, after leaving the Orchards Mall as one of the final tenants there.
It’s a similar scenario to what happened with deep discounter Big Lots, which closed many stores that were seemingly successful as part of an effort to emerge from bankruptcy.
There’s no word on the exact timetable for the Benton Township JoAnn Fabrics shutdown. However, once revealed such plans are usually executed quickly. Often a liquidator firm takes over and conducts a ‘countdown’ style going-out-of-business sale.
