Lake Michigan College is helping Southwest Michigan school districts solve their shortage of bus drivers with a new program.

LMC President Trevor Kubatzke said at this week’s meeting of the LMC Board of Trustees the college will now train school bus drivers.

“The company we work with already has the training set,” Kubatzke said. “They already do it at other places.”

Kubatzke said local school districts are donating buses to the college so they can be used in the training program. Four drivers can be trained at one time over a three-day course. LMC will launch the program at its Benton Township campus in the next few weeks.

Meanwhile, Berrien RESA superintendent Eric Hoppstock says he’s happy the college can help out.

“I think it’s an example of the collaborative way the county works together,” Hoppstock said. “We’re working through those details as trying to find a creative solution to the problem.”

Hoppstock says this can help athletics programs as well.
