Lake Michigan College renews a decades long tradition of honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. next week with a weeklong series of events kicked off by the traditional Community Breakfast on Monday morning, January 20th.
The public has been invited to participate in the entire series of free events on Lake Michigan College’s Benton Harbor Campus to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King. These are the events taking place throughout the week next week:
Breakfast Celebration and Awards Ceremony
LMC will host its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast Celebration on Monday, January 20th, from 7:45 to 10 am in The Mendel Center’s Grand Upton Hall.
This year’s theme is “A Legacy of Service.” Keynote speakers will include LMC students, Lezlyn Villa and Shaniya Sanders with musical performances by the Lake Michigan College Soundwaves and All God’s Children Community Choir. The College will also announce the recipient of its Martin Luther King Jr. Diversity Award.
RSVP’s for that event were due earlier this week.
Panel Presentation: What Can Be Done to Reduce Prejudice and Discrimination?
A panel presentation will be held on Tuesday, January 21st from noon -1:30 pm, in the Brown Lecture Hall of the Benton Harbor Campus Main Building, D-Wing. The moderator will be Jacquie Johnson. Panelists include Sandy Feldman, Kourtney Moore and Charmae Sanders. That forum is provided by The Race Relations Council and is free and open to the community, with no RSVP required.
Building Bridges Across the Racial Divide
On Wednesday, January 22nd from noon -1 pm in the Blue Lecture Hall of the Benton Harbor Campus Main Building, D-Wing, local authors, Larry and Sandy Feldman will present a discussion of concepts and examples drawn from their recently published book, Building Bridges Across the Racial Divide. That book offers a hopeful view of how well-constructed diversity initiatives can combat entrenched racial prejudice and segregation. A book signing will follow. The forum is free and open to the community,with no RSVP required.
Student Volunteer Activities
LMC students will volunteer on Wednesday and Thursday to help assemble dried bean soup and rice packets for area food pantries and create tie blankets for area homeless shelters.
