Lake Michigan College has announced the recipients of its 2024 Alumni Awards.
LMC says the awards seek to recognize outstanding achievements by graduates who have made significant impacts in their fields and communities. Three awards are given out each year.
The Alumni Achievement Award is presented to a graduate who attended LMC within the past 15 years and demonstrated significant achievement in their career, education, or community. This year, the award goes to Matthew Capps, a 2010 graduate of LMC’s nursing program. He now serves as the supervising clinical coordinator at Holland Hospital.
The Gladys Peeples-Burks Alumni Service Award recognizes grads who have made significant personal or professional contributions to the college or the broader community. It’s gone to the Reverend William Whitfield, from the LMC class of 1974. He’s a U.S. Air Force veteran, pastor, and volunteer for the local housing commission and mentor for youth in Benton Harbor.
Finally, the Clarence Beckwith Distinguished Service Award is given to recent graduate who has accomplished success in their personal or professional endeavors. The recipient this year is Dr. Sue Balms, from the class of 1991. She’s done distinguished work in higher education, having a global impact, particularly through her work in Sierra Leone.
LMC President Trevor Kubatzke says the award recipients all embody the spirit of Lake Michigan College.
