Lake Michigan College has been awarded the Highly Established Action Plan Seal by the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge for this year for the college’s efforts to keep students politically engaged.
LMC political science instructor Tiffany Bohm tells us the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge is a national awards program that recognizes colleges and universities for their work to achieve active and informed citizenship among students. This is its highest honor, the first time LMC has received it.
Bohm says the college holds a whole host of events each election year to get students interested in the political process.
“We provide voter access to information,” Bohm said. “So right now we have a voter resource guide in our library that one of our librarians created. It’s a free resource, but it provides all of the information for the upcoming general election. We also have numerous activities where we do voter registration.”
Events were held on campus last academic year to help students remain active, and more are planned for this coming academic year.
“In the spring we had Attorney General Dana Nessel give a speech. We collaborate with the League of Women Voters. We also have student fellowships and we have work-study. We have all kinds of things on campus.”
LMC’s next Voter Education Week will be in October, and Constitution Day and National Voter Registration Day will be September 17.
Bohm tells us students were motivated heading into the 2022 midterms with reproductive health and the economy as their top issues. She says the college will continue urging students to stay engaged in the political process.
