Lake Michigan College is thanking voters for approving its millage renewal this week. In a year when many school bond proposals failed, the voters overwhelmingly approved LMC’s request. College President Trevor Kubatzke tells us they’re humbled by the support.
“We’re thrilled with the folks who came out and voted,” Kubatzke said. “It really sends a message to the college that we are a vital part of the community, and we really appreciate that.”
Kubatzke says southwest Michigan knows the benefits of having a strong community college.
“I think it just speaks highly of what goes on here. We have a quality faculty, a quality education, we’re providing a quality workforce for our business and industry.”
The millage accounts for 25% of LMC’s budget. It’s been in place since the 1960s. Turnout in Berrien County was 14%, with voters approving the renewal, 11,000 to 5,700. In Van Buren County, turnout was 22%, and voters said yes to the millage, 1,400 to 500. Kubatzke says LMC stayed up late Tuesday and into Wednesday waiting on the results.
Lake Michigan College issued the following statement following the election:
The successful passage of the millage vote is a resounding affirmation of our college’s value and contribution to the region and underscores the significance of accessible and high-quality education for all.
The renewed millage will enable Lake Michigan College to continue its vital mission of providing students with affordable and innovative educational opportunities, serving as an essential hub for cultural enrichment and community engagement, and fostering local workforce development.
We would like to give special thanks to Kinexus Group, the Southwest Michigan Regional Chamber, and the Southwestern Michigan Association of REALTORS® for their endorsements. Their support reinforces the importance of community collaboration.
We also sincerely thank everyone who participated in the millage renewal vote. Your support strengthens our resolve to provide educational pathways that empower people and communities to thrive through education, innovation, and experiences.
