Lake Michigan College is honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Week this week.

Everything kicked off Monday with the MLK Community Celebration featuring a guest speaker from the NAACP, a presentation on the new MLK monuments in Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, and the announcement of this year’s Spirit of MLK Award winners.

LMC Dean of DEI Cam Herth tells us there are three awards. The award for an organization went to Present Pillars.

“Which is a local organization situated in Benton Harbor, Michigan that works with fathers in regards to raising children, supporting their families,” Herth said. “It’s a focus group for fathers in the area.”

Present Pillars Director James Gunter accepted the award. Herth says the award for an individual went to Bertha King of Benton Harbor.

“Bertha King is on several boards with Corewell Health. She’s also a multi-cultural relations facilitator. She works with DEI also, and is engaged in a variety of community initiatives in Benton Harbor and the surrounding area.”

The youth award went to Angelica Mazumder, a student at Niles High School who leads several student organizations and is headed off to Notre Dame.

Herth says the spirit of MLK will be remembered all week with panel discussions, presentations, and film screenings open to everyone. You can find a schedule for the week right here.
