Members of the business community in Michigan’s Great Southwest with newly hired workers or temporary employees in need of a better grasp of the English language have a strong ally in the team at Lake Michigan College which is adding two new English as a Second Language — or simply ESL — classes to the upcoming Spring Semester.
Lake Michigan College officials say they have added two new classes – English for Business Purposes and Focus on Grammar – to its Community Education English as a Second Language (ESL) offerings for the Spring 2020 semester.
Daniela Ortiz, the Adminstrator for the LMC ESL Program says, “English for Business Purposes is for newly hired employees or temporary workers in business, to help them communicate better in the work place,” and adds, “The Focus on Grammar class is meant to help intermediate to advanced students master grammar aspects in a communicative context, and through personalized practice.”
English for Business Purposes is a six-week course that covers everything from how to make professional presentations to understanding business negotiations by overcoming cross-cultural barriers. Focus on Grammar, a nine-week course, centers on topics such as proper use of verb tenses, modals, hypothetical statements, and articles in discourse.
LMC continues to offer beginner and intermediate ESL classes including Integrated Skills and Conversation and Culture as well as the TOEFL IBT Test Preparation course for advanced-level students looking to study at a U.S. college or university in the near future.
Spring semester classes, all taught by experienced ESL instructors, begin on February 10th on LMC’s Benton Harbor, Niles, and South Haven campuses. All non-native English speakers over the age of 18 are welcome regardless of visa status or previous language training. Students who successfully complete their course will receive a certificate of completion from LMC.
