Leaders in Lincoln Township will look at updating local rules on food trucks and food carts after hearing from a vendor who has been unable to operate in the community.
Lincoln Township Trustee Marc Florian told the township board this week the township planning commission was asked to review the rules for food trucks. So, what’s the issue?
“Right now in Lincoln Township, we don’t allow food trucks or food carts,” Florian said. “We don’t have a mechanism for approving them because we don’t allow them. However, it’s a growing trend. It’s very popular. One need only walk by the Watermark during business hours and you’ll see food trucks out there that are frequented by all kinds of different people. So, this individual came to us who happens to be a food cart operator and has asked us to give consideration to why we don’t allow it.”
The food cart vendor wanted to set up shop at the Tractor Supply store when it’s holding special events, but can’t.
Florian says no one on the planning commission remembers why food trucks and carts aren’t allowed in the township. With their growing popularity, he told trustees a review of the rules makes sense to him. They agreed.
Clerk Stacy Loar Porter said the issue comes down to whether a business can operate on the property of another business. The Lincoln Township Planning Commission will work the issue out.
