Lest We Forget is planning a slate of programming for this coming weekend. It says everything kicks off with a presentation to honor the women who have served in the military of the United States. It will be held at The Mendel Center on Friday, June 17 at 7 p.m. Lest We Forget told us more:
Lest We Forget is proud to recognize the women who have served our country in the military.
To kick off the weekend, we invite you to meet and hear the story of Shoshana Nyree Johnson (born January 18, 1973), a Panamanian-born former United States soldier, and the first black female prisoner of war in the military history of the United States. Johnson was a Specialist of the U.S. Army 507th Maintenance Company, 5/52 ADA BN, 11th ADA Brigade. During the Battle of Nasiriyah, she suffered bullet wounds to both of her ankles and was captured by Iraqi forces. She was held prisoner in Iraq for 22 days along with five other members of her unit. She was freed in a rescue mission conducted by United States Marine Corps units on April 13, 2003.
Shoshana’s book, I’m Still Standing: From Captive U.S. Soldier to Free Citizen–My Journey Home is available in advance at Forever Books, St Joseph and will be available at the Mendel Center. She will autograph your copy following her presentation.
Activities continue Saturday and Sunday, June 18 – 19, 2022 at the Southwest Michigan Regional Airport, 1123 Territorial Road, Benton Harbor, Michigan. For a full schedule of events visit www. LestWeForgetUSA.org.
