The group Lest We Forget is bringing the Cold War era to life this weekend in and around St. Joseph.
It’s a history lesson in real life. That’s how organizers describe their efforts. Since the early 2000s, the group has raised community awareness to how Southwest Michigan’s men and women have served in the armed services during active military conflicts and times of peace to protect American freedom.
This year’s theme is The Cold War, Escape From Berlin.
Lest We Forget President Larry Wozniak, as heard on WSJM’s Got Something To Say program.
“The Cold War is not a battle. The Cold War is psychological. But the World War II boats and the flame thrower and the reenactors all draw people, so we’re doing still doing those things,” said Wozniak. “So (the reenactors) will zipline from East Berlin over the wall to West Berlin to freedom. And those things actually happened in Germany. So we’re not just making things up.”
Don Alsbro started Lest We Forget in 2006 to help educate current and future generations about military actions.
This weekend’s event is Saturday and Sunday that includes a replica of the Berlin Wall, World War II landing craft rides, a reenacted beach landing marine assault, and more. For more information, visit LestWeForgetUSA.org.
