Legislation sponsored by state Senator Kim LaSata that would designate a portion of I-94 in Benton Township as the Kevin D. White Memorial Highway is now on its way to Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s desk after being approved by the Michigan House last week. LaSata’s office says White was a Michigan Department of Transportation worker who died in October of 2019 from injuries sustained while on the job in Berrien County. He was working along the side of I-94 near the 33 mile marker when a semi lost two tires and one struck him. The 48-year-old White was also the supervisor of Benton Township. LaSata says her legislation will “pay tribute to Kevin and also serve as a solemn reminder to everyone to drive safely and stay alert – especially in work zones.” The bill would create the Kevin D. White Memorial Highway, which would begin at the I-94 and I-196 interchange and extend south to the Napier Avenue exit.
