Lake Michigan College Remains Operational, Watching COVID Closely

While major four year institutions of higher learning from Michigan State to Notre Dame and many others as well have halted or will halt face-to-face classes until some time in April, Lake Michigan College continues to evaluate the situation day by day and remains open and operational at this time.

The college took to their Facebook fan page this evening to clarify the situation at all campuses in the region. Here is what they have shared online:

At Lake Michigan College, safety and health are our top priorities. Currently there are no reported cases of coronavirus COVID-19 on our campuses and we’re doing our part to protect our students, employees and visitors from this threat.

Lake Michigan College administration has been working closely with other area institutions, K-12 partners, the State of Michigan and county health departments in our district to develop cohesive prevention and response plans.

Over the past month, we’ve conducted a college-wide education campaign around the prevention of illness and followed sanitation procedures recommended by the Center for Disease Control. Additional hand sanitizer stations and antiviral wipes are available in each building. Our facilities staff are thoroughly wiping down all surface areas before and after events and doing extra wipe downs of high-touch areas.

In light of the new cases diagnosed in Michigan, as well as the state’s recommendations, all upcoming events planned on our campuses where groups of 100 or more will be gathering are being evaluated for risk.

We are aware that some four-year universities are temporarily transitioning to virtual classes. As a community college, we offer a variety of technical education classes – many of which are not conducive to online learning, however, we are working on a plan to mitigate risk while also providing quality education to our students.

We will continue to keep our college community informed over the coming days regarding any plans and future possibilities should COVID-19 appear in our area.

We will keep you up to date should circumstances change for the Lake Michigan College family at any time as they share that information with us.
