The Lake Michigan College Foundation is preparing for a benchmark year now that it’s provided the primary funding for the LMC Promise. Speaking to the LMC Board of Trustees Tuesday, Foundation Director Doug Schaeffer said the board last year voted to approve a fund for the scholarship program that provides a free college education to anyone with a gross adjusted income of $75,000 or less. Now that ir’s begun, he expects the coming year to tell a lot.
“We’re going to have real data on the number of students who qualify for those criteria,” Schaeffer said. “We’re obviously going to be paying attention to a lot of things moving at the state level as it relates to the Reconnect program. So, we’re going to be very nimble and ready to help the college as the Promise program evolves, and other opportunities that may involve other funding means, especially to support our students.”
Schaeffer said the LMC Foundation is also talking about funding books for students whose tuition is paid with the promise. He noted the Lake Michigan College Foundation is the 11th largest community college foundation in the state, which has a total of 31.
