The Krasl Art Center has announced a new exhibition celebrating the life and art of Elizabeth Catlett. Krasl told us more:
Krasl Art Center is thrilled to announce its summertime exhibition, The Art of Elizabeth Catlett from the Collection of Samella Lewis, on view June 10 – September 4, 2023. The exhibition features the work of African American sculptor and printmaker, Elizabeth Catlett, who is best known for her bold depictions of the Black experience in the 1960s and 70s.
The Art of Elizabeth Catlett presents a selection of the artist’s work from the collection of her student, fellow artist, educator, and lifelong friend Samella Lewis. Sculpture, art prints, and protest banners by Catlett tell the story of her life: her early art education in the US, her move to Mexico and membership in Taller Gráfica Popular, her continual involvement with the Civil Rights movements in both countries, and the flow of influence between her and her peers. Artworks by Samella Lewis as well as Catlett’s husband, Francisco Mora, will also be on view. The exhibition was organized by Landau Traveling Exhibitions, Los Angeles, CA.
There are two free events tied to the exhibition. Celebrate with KAC during the exhibition preview from 6 – 8 pm. The event is FREE and open to the public. Visitors will have the opportunity to see prints and sculpture by Elizabeth Catlett, see the new 2023 Pride Installation on the exterior of the art center, and experience Joy Bradley’s interactive artwork in the East Garden. Cash bar, lite bites provided by Bistro on the Boulevard, and live music. Guests can dive deeper into Catlett’s work during a Coffee with the Curator gallery tour on Thursday, June 15, from 12 – 1 pm. Sponsored by Forté Coffee.
The Art of Elizabeth Catlett will run from June 10 to September 4, 2023. For more information about the exhibition and programming, including private tour opportunities, visit krasl.org, stop by for a visit at 707 Lake Boulevard in St. Joseph, or contact KAC at info@krasl.org or 269.983.0271.
