It’s baaaack!! United Way of SW Mich announces return of Rock The Boat event

An eerie calm washed over cardboard stockpiles all around the region this morning, when the United Way of Southwest Michigan announced the return of the Rock The Boat Cardboard Boat Races.

With some cardboard, a few rolls of duct tape, some slick engineering, and perhaps a costume or two, the popular (and sometimes soggy) fundraising event is returning this summer to the banks of the St. Joseph River.

The fun-spirited fundraising race is set to take place on July 11, 2024, at the picturesque venue of The Inn at Harbor Shores in St. Joseph.

Anna Murphy, President and CEO of United Way of Southwest Michigan exuded excitement over the announcement.

“We’re ecstatic to bring back the Rock The Boat Cardboard Boat Races after the hiatus. This event is not just about fun; it’s about community engagement and supporting vital programs in our region. We’re looking forward to seeing the innovative boat designs and the friendly competition on the water.”

This unique event, which features life-size boats made entirely of cardboard, promises exhilarating entertainment for participants and spectators alike. With 75 spots available for competing teams, the races are expected to draw crowds of up to 3,000 people, building on the success of the previous event held in 2019.

Registration for teams opens on April 1, offering participants the chance to showcase their creativity and craftsmanship by constructing cardboard boats that will brave the waters of the St. Joseph River. The races will commence at 5 p.m. on July 11, promising an evening of excitement and camaraderie.

In addition to the thrill of the races, Rock The Boat offers valuable sponsorship opportunities for businesses and organizations. Sponsorship not only supports United Way’s mission but also provides excellent exposure and community goodwill.

“Rock The Boat isn’t just a fantastic team-building activity; it’s also an opportunity for businesses to align with a cause that makes a real difference in our community,” added Murphy. “We encourage local businesses to seize this chance to showcase their commitment to Southwest Michigan while enjoying a memorable evening of cardboard boat racing.”
