I&M warns customers about increase in scam attempts

Indiana Michigan Power is warning customers to beware of scams carried out in the company’s name as it sees an increase in reports of them.

I&M spokesperson Schnee Doyle tells us the scammers are getting more sophisticated.

“Through June of this year, we’ve received 240 reports of scams targeting our customers in Indiana and Michigan, and that number is an increase from all of our reported scam attempts that we had from last year,” Doyle said. “Along with that, we’ve seen an upsurge in scammers calling or texting our customers with a caller ID actually showing our name.”

Doyle says the scams usually involve someone claiming the world-be victim owes money and needs to pay up right away.

“I&M will provide multiple notices and help customers with payment plan options before we will disconnect your service.

Additionally, Doyle says the company would never request payment be made through pre-paid gift cards or third-party mobile apps.

Doyle says if anyone shows up to your door claiming to be from the company, you should request their ID. All I&M workers carry a company ID and would be wearing clothing with an I&M logo. Most would be in I&M-marked vehicles.

Anyone who receives a scam phone call should hang up and notify either Indiana Michigan Power or the police. You can find out more right here.
