Iconic Chevy is back on top of the Neon Grill

Neon Grill Chevy returns

Things have returned to ‘normal’ at the Neon Grill in St. Joseph.

The iconic 1955 Chevy has been returned to its perch atop the popular burger drive-thru at the corner of Niles Avenue and Botham in South St. Joseph.  The car had been removed and sent to the body shop for restoration after several decades atop the restaurant roof.  Neon Grill fans were counting on its return to provide a little bit of nostalgia every time they drive thru for an olive burger deluxe.

The Neon Grill is one of several local burger spots that trace their burger heritage back to  the Roxy Burger of the 1950s and 60s.  The Roxy Burger (or olive burger deluxe) recipe includes lettuce, tomato, olives and mayo.  The ‘secret’ is apparently in how they are combined on a piping hot burger patty and a fresh bun!

Burger lovers like to debate on social media which establishment comes closest to the original olive burger formula.  And the Neon Grill always ranks high in the discussion.  They also feature a variety of other sandwiches including hot dogs and grilled cheese variations.

The Neon Grill is owned by Camille and Scott Radde, who took over in 2021 from the founders, Cindy and Dale Haigler, who operated the eatery for 29 years.
