Iconic 130 Year Old Barn Gets New Roof & First Strawberries of the Season

A significant landmark in Michigan’s Great Southwest that has been on the scene for somewhere between 125 and 135 years now is due for a new cap and the people who operate their lifelong business there want you to know that the construction process will not hamper your ability to stop by for all of your favorite fresh fruits and vegetables while that happens.

Nye’s Apple Barn at 3151 Niles Road in St. Joseph Charter Township was built way back in the 1880s with hand-hewn beams. It originally housed feed and hay for the cattle that roamed in the nearby land, including down to what now is well known as Riverview Park.

The iconic barn is getting a new roof, but co-owner Angela Thompson wanted you to know in advance that the business will be open throughout the process.

In the 1960s when the existing oak shake roof was installed by John Nye, it was converted to Nye’s Apple Barn, the retail market for a wide variety of the finest locally grown fruits and vegetables, largely grown by the Nye family on lands less than two miles away.

This year marks the 49th Anniversary year of Nye’s Apple Barn and the newest generation of Nye’s can now be found roaming the farm and keeping a close eye on what the older generation is doing. Right now they have a beautiful assortment of hanging baskets and planters to add some color to your deck, porch or patio, and they also are celebrating the arrival of the year’s first local strawberries of the season alongside a grand array of locally grown asparagus and coming soon fresh rhubarb.

You’ll find the crew at Nye’s Apple Barn in the house daily from 11am until 5pm through June 9th and starting on the 10th they will remain open daily from 9am until 6pm for local shoppers as well as visitors dropping in off of Interstate-94.

So, don’t let the facelift for the barn scare you away…they’re open through the construction process and welcome everyone at I-94 and Niles Road located at 3151 Niles Road and by phone at 269-429-0596.
