Last night’s severe weather was almost totally concentrated in the area South of US Highway 12, along the Southern edge of Berrien County from New Buffalo East through Buchanan. There was heavey damage to electrical distribution systems of I & M Electric. The company is making progress on restoring service to customers and offered this update la this morning:
With more than 600 workers, Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) is making progress restoring power to customers after Tuesday night’s severe weather. As of, 10:30 a.m., approximately 8,500 customers are without service – a majority in the hard-hit areas of South Bend and Buchanan areas. Crews have restored about 35% of the more than 13,000 impacted customers after strong winds knocked down trees and branches onto power lines and power poles.
Fellow I&M employees from Fort Wayne, Marion and Muncie are helping with restoration efforts. There is a chance for more rain today and the hot, humid conditions will have crews taking breaks to hydrate. If you see our crews working in your neighborhood or along the roadways, please give them enough room to work and do not approach them for your safety and theirs.
