Preparations are underway for a major construction project on I-94 between Benton Harbor and Stevensville. Michigan Department of Transportation spokesperson Nick Schirripa tells us it’s a $204 million investment on both sides of the highway, set to start in the spring of next year.
“We’ll be rebuilding about eight and a half miles of I-94, rebuilding four bridges, repairing nine other bridges, and there’s also some repaving, ramp rebuilding, and lane additions as well,” Schirripa said. “So, there’s a lot going on.”
The project includes repaving, ramp rebuilding, and noise barrier construction. Schirripa says there will be some traffic improvements on ramps when it’s all done.
“All of the ramps at the I-94 Business Loop, M-63, and Pipestone Road interchanges are going to be rebuilt. A new ramp will be added to carry northbound M-63 traffic to eastbound I-94 So, that will eliminate that left hand turn for northbound M-63 traffic.”
Schirripa says the work gives MDOT an opportunity to change traffic patterns to reflect what traffic is like now, rather than 45 years ago. Crews are out now laying the groundwork for the construction starting next year. Throughout the three-year project, two lanes of traffic on I-94 will be maintained in both directions.
