Honor Credit Union Launches Third SJ Public Schools Student Credit Union

Recognizing that financial literacy and education is best begun at an early age, the team at Honor Credit Union has launched yet another student credit union inside the St. Joseph Public Schools District, celebrating last week with a ribbon cutting ceremony at Upton Middle School this time.

The students of Upton Middle School celebrated the grand opening and ribbon cutting of their new Upton Bears Student Credit Union on Tuesday, October 23rd, marking the third student credit union opening within the St. Joseph School District.

The new Upton Bears Student Credit Union joins Lincoln Elementary School and Brown Elementary School in hosting a student run credit union and also marks the 17th currently operating within Honor Credit Union. In anticipation of the grand opening, 11 Honor CU youth accounts were opened at Upton Middle School.

The grand opening of the Upton Bears Student Credit Union was held at Upton Middle School as Honor’s St. Joseph Branch Manager, Tanya Urias, led the student assembly to excite the school about the importance of saving money. Operating the new student credit union are student tellers and managers alongside Urias and her team at Honor. Students were invited to submit their deposits to their youth accounts shortly after the ribbon cutting ceremonies.

Joining Honor’s team members for the grand opening were State Senator John Proos, Congressman Fred Upton’s District Director Mike Ryan, and State Representative Kim LaSata’s Legislative Director Arthur Havlicek. Senator Proos presented a special tribute to Upton Middle School on behalf of himself, Congressman Fred Upton, and State Representative Kim LaSata to highlight the important life skills and financial literacy the students will learn because of the student credit union.

Upton Bears Student Credit Union will be open to the students at Upton Middle School every Tuesday from 11-12:30 pm.
