Area Agency on Aging will be giving area seniors ‘Home Safe Home‘ kits to help prevent falls in the home. Each September, Region IV Area Agency on Aging joins the National Council on Aging to spread awareness during National Falls Prevention Awareness Week, happening September 20-24.
For Falls Prevention Week 2021, a limited supply of ‘Home Safe Home’ kits are available to area residents age 80 and older in Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren Counties. The kits contain items geared to help prevent falls and allow seniors to live independent lives.
Kits include 18- and 36-inch grab bars for bathtubs and other areas, Personal Emergency Response System 911 button, a blood pressure monitor, and more. Grab bars will need installation which is not included in the kit distribution effort. Seniors living in senior housing or other rental units should check with their building manager or landlord before having grab bars installed.
Kits will be distributed in a drive through, contactless event at Area agency on Aging’s Campus for Creative Aging at 2920 Lakeview Avenue, St. Joseph, MI on September 22 from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm. Kits are available on a first-come-first served basis and should be reserved in advance.
If you are 80 years old or older and would like a kit, or know someone who meets that criteria who can use these items and would like to pick one up for them, visit www.AreaAgencyonAging.org or email Julee Laurent at juleelaurent@areaagencyonaging.org or call (269) 408-4369.
