Harbor Shores highlights summer youth program

As students at Benton Harbor High School begin a new academic year, they’re being reminded of a summer job opportunity offered by Harbor Shores.

Harbor Shores General Manager Josh Doxtator tells us the Summer Youth Golf Careers and Development Program gives students a chance to work at the attraction in a variety of roles for the summer. The program will recruit students for next summer as the new school year gets underway.

“It’s an opportunity for local youth, specifically in Benton Harbor, to get real-life work experiences here at Harbor Shores or Point O’ Woods in multiple different positions from food and here beverage to course maintenance to guest services and golf operations,” Doxtator said.

The Summer Youth Golf Careers and Development Program started in 2023 with eleven students, and this year they had 17. Doxtator says it’s a great chance for a young person to get some real-world job experience in a one of a kind environment.

“I think it just gives them an opportunity to maybe explore different avenues that they may not have thought about or may have written off as not something that they would be into. Hospitality at the end of the day is a big thing, and what we’ve seen the most is a lot of kids who might not be overly animated and things like that really come out of their shell, which is great to see.”

The program will be back in 2025, and Doxtator hopes some students who took part last year will return. Moving forward, he says some kids who get their start through the summer program could wind up in full-time roles with Harbor Shores once they’ll all done with their education.
