Hagar Township expanding public safety building to make way for ambulance personnel

An expansion of the public safety building in planned in Hagar Township. Township Supervisor Izzy DiMaggio tells us they’re going to add space for Medic One ambulance personnel so they can be stationed there all of the time. That’s after Hagar Township, Watervliet Township, Coloma Township, and the cities of Watervliet and Coloma all got together and hired Medic One to be their ambulance provider. DiMaggio says the agency keeps an ambulance crew in two locations.

“Right now they are responding to us, but they have an ambulance in Watervliet and the city of Coloma,” DiMaggio said. “The responses we’ve gotten from them in the two months they’ve been there are exceptional. They’re a lot better than our previous carrier, and so there will be even better response times for priority one and priority two calls once they are housed 365 days a year in our Riverside location.”

DiMaggio says one of the stipulations Hagar Township laid out when working with the other municipalities to hire Medic One was that a crew always be on hand in the township. The township board this week voted to hire Tera Architects, a Benton Harbor firm, for professional design services. Although the cost of the addition won’t be known until that design is complete, DiMaggio expects it will be between $175,000 to $225,000.
