Coming back to Benton Harbor after a decades-long absence is “The Fastest Male and Female on the Streets” track meet. The event is set for August 12 at Dwight P. Mitchell City Center Park and will include runners from ages 5 to 18. Benton Harbor Athletic Sports Club Chair Dayrl Jackson tells us it’s a rekindling of the Berrien County Olympian Games, which he remembers from the 1970s.
“Right now, we’re just getting our foot wet again with these young people of this age,” Jackson said. “We hope to be very successful and have a big turnout.”
Runners who compete in the August 12 track meet will compete in 50, 60, and 100 meter dash events. The winners will receive medals or ribbons, depending on how they place. Jackson says he hopes to expand the event next year. Registration will open at 9 a.m. with the races starting at 11. All Berrien County youths are invited to take part.
Organizers are also looking for volunteers. Anyone interested can call Jackson at 269-332-7018.
