Galien Rail Crossings Slated for 2-Wk Closure for Amtrak Maintenance

If you travel routinely through the community of Galien, get ready for a detour beginning this week to facilitate Amtrak rail system maintenance work on a pair of Amtrak Railroad Crossings in that neighborhood running through the first week of August.

The Berrien County Road Department tells us that Amtrak crews will close down railroad crossings on both Cleveland Avenue and Smith Road beginning on Thursday, July 23rd at 7am and running through August 7th, weather permitting.

Amtrak will be closing the two crossings for work on both the railroad crossings themselves and the railroad tracks nearby. The locations are on Cleveland Avenue inside the Village of Galien and on Smith Road in Galien Township. Both Cleveland Avenue and Smith Road will be closed to all through traffic for approximately two weeks as a result.

Cleveland Avenue will be completely closed to thru traffic at the rail crossing, and traffic will not be permitted through once the closure begins.

The established detour route is Cleveland Avenue to Second Street Road to Pardee Road to Pulaski Highway (US-12) and back to Cleveland Avenue.

Additionally, Smith Road will be completely closed to thru traffic at the railroad crossing, and you are asked to seek alternative routes or use the Cleveland Avenue detour route until the rail work is completed.
