Statistics show that one in five new businesses fail within the first year. That number climbs to nearly half by the five-year mark and 65% fail by year 10. For a business to make it to 25 years is literally a success story worthy of review — especially when the realm within which the business operates has changed so dramatically over that period.
King Media is one of those businesses that is a month away from making it to the quarter-century mark and president Coleen King says it’s a big deal. With offices in East Lansing, Ada, and St. Joseph, King says they’ve seen a lot of evolution in the marketplace.
“I started King Media five years before Facebook was born. Now social and digital media are powerful tools to reach precise audiences and mine for insights. Nearly all our client’s marketing plans have a digital and social component.”
When King Media was formed in 1999, they point out that Facebook hadn’t yet launched and 96% of households used a landline.
Another landmark achievement, the company is 100% woman-owned and Coleen counts herself among the few barrier breakers in a male-dominated industry. King was the first female sales representative in the history of Lansing’s CBS station, WLNS, rising to become a top-performing regional sales manager for both of Lansing’s CBS and NBC stations.
When King left television, she used her relationships to build King Media, specializing in advertising, marketing, and public relations services. In recent years, King says she’s made the conscious choice to focus on helping Michigan residents, businesses, and organizations succeed.
“Michigan is my home and I believe I can leave a lasting legacy by strengthening communities right here. A project has to mean something for us to take it on. Our team gets excited about contributing to the growth and vitality of communities and making a positive difference in people’s lives.”
