Every Thursday in August fans of both music and the arts are being invited to hit the ground at the Krasl Art Center in St. Joseph for a free concert series featuring select musicians from the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra.
Krasl officials are thrilled to host musicians from the SMSO for the free outdoor concert series, happening every Thursday in August beginning at 4 pm. You are invited to enjoy different musical selections inspired by opera, mythology, pop culture, storytelling, and collaboration. Bring a lawn chair and a picnic basket to the sunny, free series held among beautiful artworks on the Krasl Art Center’s campus. While the series is free, donations are appreciated and support both the Krasl and the SMSO.
Krasl’s benefactors, Olga & George Krasl, wanted to “make life more worthwhile.” The George Krasl Memorial Concert (GKMC) Fund is one more way their legacy continues to give back to the community.
The finale to the KAC – SMSO Summer Pop-Up Garden Concert series is funded in part by the 2021 GKMC Fund and combines the visual and musical arts on Thursday, August 26th with the Martin Wind Duo. Kassia and Sam Martin’s program explores the connections between music and storytelling. They will play pieces inspired by stories, from mythology, opera, and movies – some of which will include narration along with the music. Pieces include Syrinx by Claude Debussy, The Pied Piper of Harlem by Adolphus Hailstork, and Story Hour by Philip Parker.
Leading up to the finale are the following performances:
AUGUST 5th
Mark Portolese, violin; Jessie Bennett, violin; Sara Churchill, viola; and Brook Bennett, cello.
The program will include an afternoon of light classical music with “The Big Three” of classical composers; Mozart, Beethoven, and Haydn. The music will pick up and bring you to your feet with some dance music from Latin and South America.
AUGUST 12th
Brandon LePage, flute; and Rachel Miller, harp.
Speaking of Latin music, this flute and harp duet will have you dancing all night long with Piazzola’s History of the Tango. This dance-themed program will be fun, inspiring, and get you moving!
AUGUST 19th
Dan Price, trumpet; Renée Vogen, horn; and Corey Sansolo, trombone.
From Baroque to Jazz, this brass trio has a large potpourri of music. Starting with the more traditional works of Corelli and Montiverdi, all the way through catchy tunes from Gershwin, there’s a little bit of everything for everyone.
Mark your calendars, so as not to miss these spectacular collaborative and free community events.
