Fifth Third Bank Re-Ups Role at 43rd Steve’s Run for SMC

There are many ways in which local financial institutions play the role of great financial stewards and supporters of the communities they call home and provide resources to local organizations…and one of them happened this week with a ceremonial check presentation by Fifth Third Bank at Southwestern Michigan College in Dowagiac for the school’s notable Steve’s Run.

On July 29th the 43rd Annual Steve’s Run will feature a 10k run, a 5k walk & run, and a one-mile fun run all to benefit the Steven Briegel Scholarship Fund and the Mayo Clinic’s Cancer Research Fund.

On Monday night, Fifth Third’s Southwest Region Community President Randy Reimers presented an over-sized check totaling $7,000 for his bank’s role as premier sponsor of the 43rd Steve’s Run. He delivered the check to Race Director Kate Thomas, SMC Human Resources Director, and Board of Trustees Treasurer Becky Moore as their donation to the cause, along with his colleague, Dowagiac Financial Center Manager Bea Jones.

Southwestern Michigan College President Dr. David Mathews says, “We’re delighted they’ve chosen to do this again,” adding, “Besides money for scholarships and cancer research, there will be a lot of encouragement given to current cancer survivors.”

Southwestern Michigan College was founded in 1964, and Steve Briegel was the son of former college president Dr. David Briegel.  The college is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and is a member of the American Association of Community Colleges.
