Fiery Early Morning Crash Claims One Life in Benton Township

Following a fiery crash in Benton Township early this morning that killed a passenger in that car, police detectives there are asking the public for help in determining what transpired to cause the crash.

Sgt. Evan Smith of the Benton Charter Township Police Department says that around 1:48am today, his department was dispatched to the scene of the crash near the intersection of S. Benton Center Road and E. Britain Avenue.

Smith says that upon arrival officers discovered a 2016 Dodge Challenger just south of E Britain Avenue off the roadway of S Benton Center Road. The vehicle was fully engulfed in flames. Benton Township Police were assisted by Benton Township Fire Department and the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department Road Patrol.

Officers were able to put out the flames., and say that the vehicle appeared to have been traveling south on S. Benton Center Road, where it lost control just south of E. Britain and struck several trees.

First responders attempted to provide first aid to the passenger, a 25 year old Benton Harbor man, who was later pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was taken to Spectrum Health Lakeland with minor injuries.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department Accident Reconstruction Unit assisted with the investigation of the crash, and the incident remains under investigation.
