Allegan County Sheriff’s Deputies are faced with a stark mystery this Halloween morning following a late night crash near the intersection of Blue Star Highway and 109th Avenue in Casco Township, and they are asking the public’s help in solving it. The mystery stems from how and why the crash occurred, who died in the crash and where they are from.
Allegan County Sgt. Morgan Sullivan says that the department was dispatched shortly after 10pm last night, Wednesday, October 30th, to the scene of the crash which resulted in a massive fire that killed whoever was inside. They say because of the severity of the blaze they don’t know if the victim of the fire was a man or a woman. Even the vehicle’s identification number and license plate were destroyed by the intense fire.
Sullivan says that firefighters from South Haven Area Emergency Services managed to put the fire out, and discovered the victim in the process, but say that he or she was burned beyond recognition by the flames.
Authorities say that the car, a Dodge Durango, appeared to have beenn headed west on 109th Avenue, but failed to yield at the stop sign crossing over Blue Star Highway, then struck a small hill in a wooded area on private property before flipping over and landing upside down. There were no witnesses to the crash.
Police are asking anyone aware of a missing person last known to be driving a late 90’s or early 2000’s Dodge Durango, “possible silver in color,” to contact the Allegan County Sheriff’s Department.
The crash ended up beneath high voltage power lines, but there was no interruption of power to the area, and officials from Consumers Power Company came to the scene to inspect the power lines for any potential damage from the intense heat of the fire.
Assisting the Allegan Sheriff’s office at the scene were Michigan State Police, South Haven Area Emergency Services, and Consumers Power. The crash remains under investigation by the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office accident investigator. It is unknown if speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.
