A timely and highly relevant topic will be the focus of a South Haven Speakers Series presentation on Thursday, March 31.
“The Roots of the Russian-American Discord” will be presented by Dr. Jim Butterfield, Professor of Political Science and Allied Faculty in Global and international Studies at Western Michigan University.
The presentation will be held at the South Haven campus of Lake Michigan College beginning at 7 p.m.
Dr. Butterfield, who specializes in Russian history and the states of the former Soviet Union, will explore the reasons Russia acts the way it does toward the United State and the West, drawing on such significant factors as its culture, religious Orthodoxy, search for identity and the breakup of the Soviet Union.
“This presentation will be one of the most timely and relevant topics our Series has addressed in its long history,” said Series President Mark Odland. “Professor Butterfield will offer a unique perspective on the current crisis over Ukraine based on more than 40 visits to Russia and nearby countries.”
Dr. Butterfield is a Fulbright Scholar (twice in Russia, once in Vietnam) and has directed study abroad programs in Russia and Turkey.
The Speakers Series is entering its eighth season. Even though the pandemic was a factor in recent months, the Series committee was able to sponsor four events in 2021 — two in-person and two virtually.
The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $10 at the door. Current COVID protocols will be observed.
Anticipating a large turnout, Odland is encouraging attendees to arrive early to assure they have a good seat. The presentation will not be streamed live.
