There will be plenty happening around southwest Michigan to honor veterans this Saturday as part of Veterans Day.
Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey tells us a Salute to our Veterans program will be held at Eau Claire High School. It will be in the gym starting at 5 p.m. with a dinner. Then a guest speaker will address the crowd at 7.
“All of the branches of the service are recognized, the principal is the speaker, and then they have a guest speaking coming in who is a veteran,” Bailey said. “The Eau Claire band will be there playing…It’s just a great evening to recognize and tells our veterans thank you for serving our country.”
The speaker will be John Meeks II, who served in Vietnam. All veterans are welcome to bring one guest for dinner, which will be chicken.
Also Saturday, the Daughters of the American Revolution will hold their annual wreath laying on the bluff in St. Joseph at 11 a.m. Representatives of the Pokagon Band of Pottawatomi will be on hand because the ceremony will honor one of the soldiers listed on the World War I monument, a Native American named Henry Quigno. The ceremony will begin with sirens and then a moment of silence.
And in New Buffalo, the American Legion Post 169 is having a flag retirement ceremony at 11 a.m. with a dinner from 4 to 7 p.m.
