Coming soon to Lake Michigan College could be a new degree program in ESports. The LMC Board of Trustees signed off Tuesday on moving forward with the program that would have students earning an associate degree in the field. Vice President of Academic Affairs Ken Flowers tells us LMC has a partnership with RESA for ESports, and Ferris State University reached out to the college last year about having a transfer agreement. He says there’s a lot that an ESports student would study.
“A lot of times, people say, ‘Oh they’re just playing games.’ But there’s a lot of job opportunities, whether it be coding, the experience of the gaming realm and planning these kinds of events. So, event planning, sales, marketing. All of those types of areas in and around the events of ESports. They’re leaning lots of different things.”
ESports is the competitive playing of video games. Flowers says more people watch ESports than many regular sports, and the field is quickly growing. Before the program is offered at LMC, it would have to go through a few more approvals. If all goes well, it could go live in the fall.
