The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is planning to auction off surplus land it owns around the state. The DNR’s Michael Michalek tells WSJM News 188 properties will be for sale in August and early September.
“This is the result of a land review the department’s been doing,” Michalek said. “It’s part of our land strategy. We’re looking at parcels that are away from our management boundaries, mostly stuff that’s under 200 acres in size that’s surrounded by private land owners. Berrien and Van Buren counties are in the first group that we’re reviewing,”
There are a few parcels in Berrien and Van Buren counties, including a piece of land along Lake Michigan in Benton Township. Michalek says the owners of properties adjacent to the ones on the auction block are often interested in acquiring them. The auction will be held online starting August 2 through September 9, and the sales will be held by county. The Berrien and Van Buren county auction will be August 18.
