E bikes are now being allowed on more Michigan trails.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources this week announced a new land use order allowing E bikes on improved-surface trails, like linear trails — paved, gravel, or asphalt — as well as natural-surface, non-motorized bicycle trails and pathways in state parks. The DNR tells us this means E bikes can be taken on state trails that already allowed the use of traditional bicycles that previously did not allow E bikes.

The rule change doesn’t affect any trails in Southwest Michigan. The trails at parks like Warren Dunes State Park and Grand Mere State Park do not allow the use of bicycles at all. Van Buren State Park does allow bicycles, but it already allowed for E bikes due to trails there being improved-surfaces.

Nevertheless, the Michigan Natural Resources Commission voted this week to allow E bikes on more trails, saying the decision opens the state’s trails to be even more inclusive.

If you hit up a state park that allows the use of bicycles, you just might see someone on an E bike.
