South Bend International Airport users are smiling today after an announcement from Delta Airlines and SBN Airport officials. Delta will resume direct daily flights to and from Detroit (DTW) in September, greatly simplifying air travel planning when heading to East Coast business destinations.
Delta had cancelled South Bend-Detroit service last November after serving the busy route for decades. Business travelers were left scratching their heads as to why a route that frequently flew at near capacity would be cancelled. It appears the reasoning related to changes in the makeup of Delta’s fleet of aircraft and South Bend ended up an ‘odd man out.’ That was never confirmed by officials.
The new Delta service starting in September will employ 76-seat CRJ- 900 aircraft featuring two-class service, according to an announcement from the airport. Only one roundtrip a day is being added-back, however the scheduling is fairly well-timed for business travelers.
The SBN-DTW schedule will operate as follows:
The morning flight to Detroit will depart South Bend at 8:05am, arriving in Detroit at 9:20 am.
The return flight from Detroit to South Bend will depart DTW at 7:45 pm, arriving in South Bend at 8:45 pm.
Tickets are on-sale now at www.delta.com.
The first arrival from DTW resumes on September 10, with the Detroit departure the following morning., September 11.
South Bend International has many daily flights to other major US airport hubs, including Chicago, Minneapolis, Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Phoenix and Las Vegas, in addition to several Florida vacation destinations. However, the Detroit hub is particularly important to business travelers and those connecting to Delta international flights to Europe.
