Death Claims Benton Harbor School Board President

Add another sad twist into the fight to save Benton Harbor High School. Word has come today that the President of the Benton Harbor Area Schools Board of Education, Stephen Mitchell, has died suddenly.

In fact, his death forced the cancellation of an important school board meeting slated for today. Board Vice President Joseph Taylor issued a brief statement alerting the community to Mitchell’s death.

Here is what Taylor issued today:

“The Benton Harbor Area School Board regrets to inform you that Board President Steve Mitchell died today. The Board, the District, and the community are forever grateful for President’s Mitchell’s leadership and his many years of service with Benton Harbor Area Schools. We are heartbroken and our prayers are the Mitchell family.”

There was no immediate indication as to the cause of Mitchell’s death, however, The Herald-Palladium Newspaper says he “suddenly fell ill.” President Mitchell was 71 years old at the time of his death.
