County Treasurer Warns Foreclosure Date is At Hand for Delinquent Property Taxes

If the last thing you want to see is that giant red stamp that says “Foreclosed” on your personal mortgage or the deed to your home, time is rapidly evaporating for some form of resolution.

If you’re in that tight spot, you’re not alone. Berrien County Treasurer Bret Witkowski says that as of 5pm last night, Tuesday, March 26th, 2019, there were 915 parcels in Berrien County delinquent on their tax bills and collectively they owe $1,207,000.00

Witkowsi issued a final reminder this morning that warns:

Property owners owing 2016 taxes, by State Law those taxes have to be paid in full by April 1st 2019, or in a signed payment plan with the County Treasurer. Any attempted payment after April 1st 2019 for the 2016 taxes without a signed payment plan can not be accepted per State Law. Any property that does not have their 2016 taxes paid in full or enrolled in a signed payment plan will be sold to the public on July 23, 2019.

Witkowski cautions that his hands are tied by state law for anyone trying to get into a payment plan after the deadline has passed no matter how good your intentions of whatever reason that caused you to miss the deadline.
