Cottage Food Law Workshop Coming

If you count yourself among those who have killer recipes for things like small baked goods, jams, jellies, salsas, preserves or anything else that you're convinced would be the next "must have" items at a local Farmers Market, or just want to try your hand at being the next Ryan Thornburg or Martha Stewart, the crew at Cornerstone Alliance is ready to help you sort out what it takes to get there.

Cornerstone's Small Business Services team wants you to know that Michigan's Cottage Food Law allows you to prepare and store certain foods in a home kitchen for sale to the public. The Small Business Services crew encourages entrepreneurs who are interested in business and food safety issues, as well as selling cottage foods safely and successfully to attend the Cottage Food Law-How to Operate from your Home Legitimately Workshop on Thursday, September 8, 2016 from 5:30pm to 7:00pm at the Lake Michigan College South Haven Campus in Room 143 at 125 Veterans Boulevard in South Haven.

Mark Thomas is an Educator at the Food Product Center for Michigan State University in the Food, Agricultural and Bio areas. He will be leading the workshop, which will focus on these key areas and more:

  • Food Safety Aspects of Preparing Cottage Foods
  • Knowing How to Prepare Cottage Foods Safely and Successfully
  • Understanding what Foods can be Legally Produced
  • How to Label Foods
  • How to Sell Foods

The cost for this workshop is $20.00, and pre-registration is required. The deadline to register is Friday, September 2, 2016.  A limited number of partial scholarships will be available for qualified Women's Business Center at Cornerstone Alliance and Microloan clients.
