Berrien County is getting some new and improved traffic signals in several locations.
The Berrien County Board of Commissioners this week approved a contract with the Michigan Department of Transportation to modernize traffic signals through the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program. They include several signals in St. Joseph and Benton Harbor.
Affected roads will be Hilltop, Napier, Colfax, Union, Crystal, Pipestone, Mall Drive, Sodus Parkway, Red Arrow Highway, John Beers, and Sawyer Road.
The new signals will be equipped with cellular modems, battery backups, video detection, and countdown pedestrian signals, plus new mast arms, controllers, and cabinets.
The cost of the signal replacements will be $875,000 with the federal government covering $362,000 and the Berrien County Road Department covering $513,000.
