If you’ve ever wanted to run an obstacle course with your dog, your opportunity is coming up soon. Southwest Michigan’s Midwest Canine Obstacle Course event is just under a month away. Race Director Mike Petlick says it’s a 5k course at The Woods Fitness Park in Benton Harbor — it’s filled with different challenges that frisky dogs and their owners, young and seasoned alike, will enjoy.
“You and your dogs will be leashed, you’ll be traveling around the course, you’ll be helping each other. There are tunnels, ramps, some water obstacles, dirt, mud, all kinds. (You’re) helping each other through tunnels, ramps, some water obstacles, dirt, mud… It’s all kinds of fun.”
Petlick says the obstacle run is a nationwide draw. He says it originated in Alabama where he’s seen as many as 1,300 teams enter. There are also events in Tennessee and North Carolina. Petlick says it’s a blast.
“It is basically every dog, every age, every person (and) a really cool event. We have about 11 or 12 states already signed up, plus Canada. We’re really looking forward to it.”
The event happens over three days (June 7 – 9). The obstacle race is Saturday June 8. Petlick encourages all ages and abilities to participate. To enter the big event, it’s $110. You can do the dog-friendly 5k for $40. The Kids Obstacle Run is $20.
